Smashing autism stereotypes
Shay Bell, who has autism and a speech delay, works as a porter at a 5-star Sydney hotel.
According to the ABS, the unemployment risk of people with autism is about eight times higher than that of people without disabilities. Even compared to other disabilities, people with autism are three times more likely to be unemployed.
Emily Bourke, assistant minister, said: "If we want to make change, then we have to bring knowledge to our workplaces".
As for Bell, he used part of his NDIS funding to access the training in hospitality. Thanks to that, Bell had the opportunity to get his current job and become more independent.
